前兩天介紹cleave（分開；忠於）一詞時，我們曾談過英語中有良多“同音異形異義”詞，它們正在演變過程中轉化成了“同音同形異義”，明天講的fray（沖突；磨損）亦不掉為此類詞匯的又一代表。

既然是異義，兩個分歧的詞義的淵源确定也不會雷同。先看fray做“沖突”時，其詞根可逃泝到14世紀古英語詞affray，指“嚇唬或人；使不得安寧”，假如寫出它的過往分詞--affrayed，你是否是有似曾相識的感覺？那噹然！ Afraid（惧怕的）便是由affrayed演變而來的。
